Overview

The Mg P-type was a 2-door sports car produced by MG from 1934 to 1936 as a replacement for the J-Type Midget. The new car had a strengthened and longer chassis than the J-Type with enhancements to engine, suspension and steering.

The P-Type was introduced as the MG PA in 1934 and some 2,00 examples were completed before development led to the MG PB which started production in 1935.

The MG PB had a bigger 939cc engine with an increased output of 43hp and is much rarer with only a mere 500 examples being built before production ceased in 1936.

According to MG factory records this MG PB was completed in January 1936, allocated to University Motors London and first registered by Cresta Motor Co, Worthing to a Mrs Speranza, of Steyning Sussex in May 1936. How long Mrs Speranza kept the car is unclear but factory records show the MG belonging to Messrs Pimm Son & Co Ltd, ‘House Furnishers, Decorators & Removers’ in Guildford by 1946 and to a Mr Wilmhurst from Harrow in 1948. By 1953 it had made its way to well-known and flamboyant London dealer Raymond Way who owned one of London’s largest car dealers, Raymond Way Motors of Kilburn. This is where its next and current keeper found and purchased it, according to the bill of sale on file, on 2nd January 1954 and has owned it ever since then!!

A young Aircraft Engineer in his early 20’s serving with the RAF on National Service stationed in Cirencester he bought the MG as his first ever car. Fed up with the train and bus journey when on leave he used it as his transport between Cirencester and home in Olney where the car remains today! After leaving the RAF he returned to Olney and swapped aeroplanes for cars and became an automobile engineer at the local garage acquiring several other old cars and motorbikes along the way. Being a trained and meticulous worker, all his machines were restored and maintained impeccably over the years but the MG, being his first car was always the favourite! After retiring he decided to fully restore his MG and did all the work himself with the exception of the trimming which was carried out by a family member who worked in the trim shop at Wolverton Works, and the paint which was completed by a local artisan. Although finished a few years ago the MG PB has had little road use being dry stored but maintained, run up and tinkered with on a regular basis to keep it in the superb condition you see it in today.

This immaculate MG PB has been in the same ownership for the last 70 years, presents beautifully and is in exceptional condition throughout. MG Factory records confirm the car retains its original body, engine, gearbox and axle and it is recognised by the Triple-M Register.
